Sherwin Nuland,
the surgeon and author, talks about the development of electroshock
therapy as a cure for severe, life-threatening depression. Midway
through, his story turns personal. It’s a moving and deeply felt talk
about relief, redemption, second chances.
I think it is worthwhile that you may take your time and listen to what Sherwin Nuland has to say about electroshock. Depressions almost expand with epidemic proportions all over our Western hemisphere. It does not spare kids nor does it the elderly of our societies. When I worked in psychiatry in the eighties eletroshock was still applied occasionalIy. I witnessed this practice and I was strictly against this kind of therpay/for me torture. Today I know that my view was a purely political one. Electroshock and insulinshock treatment was proscribed.
I don’t know, do we have to reconsider our views? Is it an option, not in any case, but in certain cases. Could it be that shock therapy harms less than the various pills we became so used to, addicted to, pills that twist our minds on the long run, there can’t be a doubt.
